Here’s Your Chance to Get That Real Life Master Composter Certification

Even though the militant composter gets a bad rap in popular critiques of the lifestyle environmentalist, I’d be willing to bet that the vast majority of people reading this article either compost or feel sheepish about skipping out. And that’s a great thing, but New York City doesn’t make it all that easy (although you have options). For the most part, you either have to schlep it to the Greenmarket, have your own backyard space or brave the indoor composting routine. Until the city makes it easier to indulge our slacktivist tendencies by installing an adorable bin in every household, they’re providing a Master Composter Course to help you learn all about the small-scale composting process, how to use finish compost, how to design and build compost systems and how to teach others about it.

The course, which costs $40 and requires an 18-23 hour in-classroom commitment, will be hosted at many different sites including the New York Botanical Garden, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the Lower East Side Ecology Center among others. The upcoming classes start in March and run for 7-8 weeks and include two field trip days. The class will prepare you to start your own projects and train others in order to make composting more accessible. Depending on your preferred site, applications deadlines start February 7.
